The holiday season is in full swing and making sure you stay on budget is a present in itself. We give you the tips on the top money wasters this holiday season to help avoid overspending and make sure that you enjoy your holidays without being financially stressed.
Shipping Fees:
Online shopping has made shopping this holiday season incredibly easier and can help with avoiding the crowds at the mall. But make sure that when you’re ordering online that you are taking into consideration shipping and handling fees. Depending on where the products are coming from is what will make the shipping costs so high. Most online retailers offer free shipping when you spend a certain amount, but also keep checking for free shipping with any purchase, as it is very common to see free shipping specials around this time of year. You shouldn’t be spending more than necessary just for free shipping.
Paying Regular Price:
Tis the seasons for sales and specials. Paying regular price for items means you are shopping in the wrong store. Do your research when it comes to the items you‘re after by finding out where they are available and for price comparison. By searching online, you may find online exclusive discount codes or sales that are not available in store. Online will also show you where your item is available, and depending on the store, they may price match that item which will also help you save. Hang on to receipts as stores also have surprise sales during the holiday season, so even if you did pay regular price for that item, stores will honour the sale price if you bring it in.
Credit Card Interest:
Last month we wrote a piece on how to use your credit card wisely, and all of those tips still apply. Over spending during the holidays is very common with the number of gifts, meals, guests and holiday joy there are. But make sure those charges to your credit card don’t send you over budget. You may think your saving big by purchasing all of your gifts on sale, but if you aren’t paying it off you’re not saving any money when you’re paying the interest.
The Wrong Gift:
There is always that one person on your list that is difficult to buy for, and as much as it is the thought that counts, you want to make sure you are not wasting your money on gifts this holiday season. Always ask for a gift receipt or make sure you keep the original receipt. This will help with exchanges and refunds if they need to be made. Most retailers have a holiday return policy in place and will notify you of this when making purchases. Also, gift cards are a great gift to give that someone who you know likes to shop at certain places, but you can’t find a particular item for them. This gift card will let them choose their own gift you know they will enjoy.
